HEMLOCK - DISCO BREAK By Founding Member Louis Lowy
Hemlock was formed in South Florida by Louis Lowy in the early-seventies. They did covers at the time and became extremely popular in this region. Around the mid-seventies they made some personnel changes and decided to write and record their own material. Also around this time Warner Brothers Studios and Mike Curb Records (which was distributed by Warner Brothers), held a nation wide contest looking for original music bands. They submitted a song called 'Sweet Sweet Music' (written by Ray Garcia/Louis Lowy/David Roppolo). They eventually beat out over 3000 bands to win the contest. Mike Curb records signed them to a record contract, flew them out to California and they recorded Sweet Sweet Music along with a newer song, lead singer Ysauro Hernandez had written called Disco Break. Disco Break became the A side and Sweet Sweet Music became the B side. The record company released it in both four inch and twelve inch versions, though the twelve inch version seems to be the one circulating around. To Warner Brothers, Mike Curb and the band's delight the record sold about 70,000 copies and made the top of the dance charts in Philadelphia, Washington and the New York area. The producer, Jerry Steiner, was also very pleased and asked Hemlock to score the musical soundtrack for the movie 'Swap Meet', a teen sex-ploitation action comedy, which included Danny Devito and Rhea Pearlman. Hemlock wrote about ten songs for the soundtrack and released about three records from that session including Body Rhythm which Warner Bros remixed as a 12 inch single hiring Richie Rivera who just did the mix of Anita Wards 'Ring My Bell'. They also released 'Drive Me Crazy' 'Look At Me Now' and a few others. Toward the end of the seventies the members, being the naïve kids they were, thought they could do better by going their separate ways. Swap Meet can occasionally be found on eBay, along with Hemlock records. You can also find info on the movie at imdb.com and record websites.
Disco Break was one of those hidden treasures of the Disco era that very few people ( unless they are die hard fans of the genre ) remember. Exploding with a guitar riff , that made you run to the closet and put on your Qiana shirt ,the track delievered from beginning to end.The record broke on " El Show de Enrique de la Maza " and was even used as his theme music for this show for a few months. Disco Break taught me that in Miami " We did the Muscle" .....who knew
I've got something that makes you want to move And I've got something that makes you want to groove I've got something that takes your heart away And it's something that's here and gonna stay It's calleD
