BABE CAME AROUND WHILE HEAVEN WAS STILL PERFORMING BUT
TOWARDS THE END OF THE HEAVEN ERA. HEAVEN DISMANTLED AFTER
TONY FERNANDEZ AND SEVERAL OTHERS GOT ACCEPTED INTO MEDIACL
SCHOOL. THEN, WAFY AND PEDRIN FORMED MINT WHICH DID NOT LAST
LONG EITHER.
BABE HUNG AROUND FOR A LITTLE BIT BUT AT THIS POINT, THE OPEN
HOUSES HAD ENDED DUE TO CONTINOUS GANG FIGHTS AT THESE
VENUES. NO ONE WANTED TO RENT A HALL FOR THESE TYPE OF EVENTS.
ANOTHER BAND FROM THE 70'S WAS ODYSSEY. THERE IS NOT MUCH OUT
THERE ABOUT THEM EXCEPT THAT Their LEAD SINGER LEO RODRIGUEZ,
LATER JOINED MANTRAP AND HE COMPOSED A SONG FOR OUR FIRST
ALBUM CALLED MOMENTOS DE AYER AND TWO SONGS FOR OUR DISCO
FANTASY ALBUM. COME BACK AND EL DIA QUE TE CONOCI.
Marc Vuksanovic - Guitar Player for Babe
We were playing at an open house dance event in 1977 and our manager
Tony Parodi, introduced me to a producer for TK Records named Ray
Martinez who hired me to play guitar on a disco record that he was
producing by "Amant" it was called "If there's love". The bass player on the
session was Arnold Paseiro of the Group Foxy.
The very first real night club Babe ever played after the open house scene
ended was Pete and Lenny's in Fort Lauderdale and the band Ecstasy was
the house band before Babe. Later in 1978, we played at The Brasserie near
the Miami airport. The band that used to play there before us was Wolfgang,
and their saxophone player named Charley DeChant was discovered by
Hall and Oats. I think he's still with them today. Babe also played at the very
first Calle ocho festival and I have played it many times since then
including with Nil Lara, Apex and Maria Conchita Alonso when she hired our
band Apex to tour the US, Central and South America as her band.
Some of the famous recording artists that Babe shared the stage with
(opened for) in our short existence are: Kool and the Gang, Maimi sound
machine, Foxy, The Salsoul orchestra and Jorge Santana (Carlos' brother)
an amazing player and very nice person.
Babe's super single record included the two songs "Rock swing" and
"Together" and was produced by Carlos Oliva. Our manager at the time
Tony Parodi made all the connections for the band. The song "Rock swing"
was played in Mexico as the theme song for a TV disco dance program, and
many DJ's in Miami played it as well.
After Babe broke up, the singer Robert Gonzalez and myself formed a band
called Apex. our manager Tony introduced us to Joe Galdo who became
our producer for our debut record "First signs of life". Joe Galdo went on to
make hits for Gloria Estefan on the album Primitive love which had the
mega hit, "Conga". Joe Galdo also played in Robert Palmer's band during
the time of Doctor doctor give me the news... bad case of lovin' you...... Joe
is also one my my mentors along with Tony Parodi and Carlos Oliva. I
learned so much from working with them.
Take care DJ Alex Gutierrez and thanks again for keeping our history alive!
P.S. I also lead a band here in Southwest Florida. The Marc Vee Band plays
all kinds of parties, weddings and events. If you know of anyone who needs
a really good well rehearsed band, let me know. Please visit
www.themarcveeband.com There are sound clips and many disco songs.
