Looking at all these pre-photoshop flyers makes you wish you went to everyone of these OPEN HOUSES !! Dupont,Electrician, Salon Azul , you can almost feel the excitement you felt when you were first handed one of these, What do I wear? Who do I ask to give me the $3.00? Abuelo....no I asked him last week , Tia , maybe? Who will drive all 10 of us? These were just some of the worries we faced as Jr. High and High school students ( ah,to only have those problems today ) For all their simplicity these plain ( by today's standards ) flyers evoked a feeling of spectacle , en event not to be missed. Something that would be talked about all week at school . You had to be there at whatever cost. It was the equivalent of a High School game for all of us " Discotecos" we had to show our support for our favorite band. The first set was the most difficult for those of us in the audience, who would " ROMPER EL HIELO " the girls were usually on one side and the guys on the other. " Play a slow , we prayed quietly to ourselves, " Play a slow " " and then ,the stage turned blue ,the mirror ball illuminated the entire hall , and SAMBA PA TI by Santana sent every young man in the place running ( pero con PINTA ) to the girls we had been looking at ( and would swear they had been looking at us )
for the last half hour. The Open House had officially begun. Like in March of the Penguins we had chosen our mate for life ( well at least until the end of the dance ) We had just enough to buy us both a Coke and if we were smart we would offer one to her " Chaperona " We danced , we held hands ,we wondered what our children would look like , for those few hours the combination of the music and lights gave us all a feeling of belonging , we never realized then how much we would miss those days today. Slowly re-playing every second in our mind, for those moments we reserve everyday for Daydreaming. Alex Gutierrez
