90s Dance music derived styles from every musical genre before it. It remained true to Disco
by preserving its beat and it’s lyrical content. It derived from House music by sequencing it’s
tracks and instrumentation, It also derived some hip hop elements in it’s delievery. So it is
extremely difficult to define which artists represent the 90s. In this page I have included artists
that may have received little to no airplay ,but were successful from a DJ point of view.
Early in the 90s
BLACKBOX appeared with their hit RIDE ON TIME in my opinion this vocal
dance track revitalized the dance music scene in clubs. Black Box was comprised of  three
Italian studio musicians who  were later involved in controversy when it was discovered that
they had sampled phrases from Loleatta Holloway’s "Love Sensation. The track brought the
focus back on the vocals rather than the music which house music had made repetative , and
opened the door for other dance artists to produce vocally rich cuts.
In 1991 ROZALLA born Rozalla Miller, in Ndola, Zambia hits with
EVERYBODY FREE
another powerful  groundbreaking dance track, that contained some TECHNO elements,
another style that would enjoy a short lived popularity .
Rozalla   also toured with Micheal
Jackson on his "Dangerous" tour, .
The remix became extremely popular in the 90s, names such as
Junior Vasquez, Hex Hector ,
Armand van Helden, Funky Green Dogs , Josh Wink  who became known to DJs who were
loyal to thier favorite remixers.  I would say that the remix was directly responsible for Dance
Music success in the 90s ,at least at the club level and managed to hold back the invasion of
Hip Hop as the main genre of choice  of  a dance club .The 90s contribution to dance music
was mainly in the production aspect, the way the music was made, the DJs who remixed it,
Commercially successful acts like C+C music Factory,Snap, Technotronic, began
incoorporating a " Rap" style into their music, writing on the wall as to what awaited  us in the
future. The later nineties gave us what was known here in Miami as " Euro" La Bouche,Le
Click,Real McCoy,Captain Hollywood Project, Double Dee very electronic , keyboard heavy.
Eventually the sound died out,too pretty, not dark enough for radio that was being
overpowered by Hip Hop.
