THE WARLOCKS
The Warlocks were one of Miami’s most popular garage bands of the late 60s and early 70s.
The band’s claim-to-fame was their great harmony and their accurate way to reproduce a large
repertoire of cover songs. The original members consisted of Victor “Cuqui” Berrios on
keyboard, Robert Gonzales on bass, Ricky Murciano lead guitar, Tony Robledo on drums and
Renny “Ray” Tirador lead vocals.
In the late 60s, the band played at most of the popular teen dances, open houses and parties
in South Florida. Some of these places included The World, The Place, The Armory,
Cloverleaf, the Friday dances at Municipal Auditorium in Hialeah ( House band throughout
1969) and in several Miami Beach Hotels.
In 1969, the band changed its name to “The Universal Joint” for a short period of time and was
hired to become the house band at a club in Hialeah called The OZ. The owners of The OZ
were never able to get the permits to open the club so they actually became the first promoters
to hold a concert at Miami Jai Alai, which featured The Hombres, The Beacon Street Union
and The Universal Joint.
After this concert, lead singer Renny “Ray” Tirador left the band to attend the University of
Florida and the other remaining members regrouped, changing its name back to The
Warlocks. New members joined the band throughout the 70s, including Henry Sierra lead
vocals. In 1971, Ricky Murciano the lead guitar player of the group and an important member
of the band died in a car accident and The Warlocks found themselves trying to regroup again.
The Warlocks played together until 1972 when the band morphed into several local popular
bands of the time. Cuqui and Robert played started a band called Bogey then soon after they
joined The Peach after some of the members of Peach joined Paul Revere and the Raiders.
